![]() ![]() NOTABLE EXCEPTION: Languages only take 100 days of tool cap. For example, a player may master 2 master toolss, and 2 gaming sets, or 1 master tool, 2 gaming sets and 2 skilled tools. ![]() The base days per tool before reduction are used for this calculation. This does not include tools from background or class. Each player may only have 1000 base tool days assigned to them, except for bards, which may have up to 1500. Several new rules were implemented in my games because of this.įirstly, as nobody can master all the tools, there is a limitation. The formula for calculating the time taken is thusly:īase - ((Main Stat + Intelligence - 20) x 10) = Total number of daysįor example, it would take a player with 16 Dexterity and 9 Intelligence 200 days to master the use of Thieves' Toolsīase (Thieves' Tools) - ((Dexterity + Intelligence -20) x 10) = TotalĢ50 - ((16+9-20)x10) = 250-50 = 200 days, or about 7 months Wisdom: Alchemist's Supplies, Brewer's Supplies, Cartographer's Tools, Cook's Utensils, Jeweler's Tools, Herbalism Kit, Poisoner's Kit,Land Vehicles, Water VehiclesĬharisma: Disguise Kit, Forgery Kit, Musical Instruments ![]() Intelligence: Tinker's Tools, Gaming Sets, Navigator's Tools Strength: Carpenter's Tools, Cobbler's Tools, Mason's Tools, Smith's Tools, Woodcarver's Toolsĭexterity: Caligrapher's Supplies, Potter's Tools, Leatherworker's Tools, Painter's Supplies, Weaver's Tools, Thieves' Tools Master (400 Days) : Artisan tools, Forgery Kit, Languages, Water VehiclesĮach tool has an attribute assigned to it which, along with Intelligence, determines how long it takes the tool to be learned by that character. Skilled (250 days) : Disguise Kit, Herbalism Kit, Musical Instruments, Navigator's Tools, Poisoner's Kit, Thieves' Tools, Land Vehicles My players have given me positive feedback so far, and seem to enjoy it.Įach tool is assigned a base difficulty that determines the number of days of training (8 hours per day) required to learn them. Have your players ever tried to use the "Training" part of the PHB to learn a new tool, to only be stunned as they are told that it takes 250 days and 250 gold regardless of the tool and the talents of the individual? Well that happened to me, so I came up with a system to better allow for training tools in a more immersive way. ![]() The DM Help Network /r/BehindTheTables /r/DMToolkit /r/DndMaps /r/DndAdventureWriter /r/DndRealms /r/DndMonsters /r/DndIdeas Or use the Multireddit Wait to post again until your most recent submission is out of the top-10.ĮXPLORE THE WIKI ARCHIVES Message the Moderators To ask questions please join our Discord, or use our weekly megathreadĨ. The only kit that sounds even remotely like the artistic version of stonework is the Jeweler's tools, but again, that's a very specific discipline that's not related to carving works of art out of marble. We are a library of resources and we're here to help!Ģ. Surely it wouldn't be woodcarving tools, which are explicitly for use with wood. "Mason's tools" seem like the wrong choice for the same reason you wouldn't use carpentry tools to whittle (chainsaw sculpture aside, where part of the art form is that you're using the wrong kind of tools), but I just don't see what else to apply. One of my players has decided to work on a stone carving (for reasons) and I'm suddenly finding myself stymied on what tool kit makes sense for that kind of work. Mason's tools are obviously the right tool for building brick or stone structures, but seem completely inadequate for doing sculpture work, and there's no "Stonecarver's tools" or "Sculptor's tools" listed. There's a clear distinction here between construction tools and artistic tools.īut there seems to be no such distinction for stone. Two of those kits are Carpenter's tools and Woodcarver's tools, and Xanathar's breaks them down the way you'd expect from the names: Carpenter's tools are useful for constructing wooden structures and furniture, while Woodcarver's tools are for detailed carving work like figurines (and arrows). In the Player's Handbook there's a list of about 20 "Artisan's Tools" that player characters might have proficiency with, and what those tool kits contain and can do is expanded on in Xanathar's Guide to Everything. ![]()
